SITE
VISIT:
The
World Refining Association is delighted to announce that a limited
number of attendees to the Global Biofuels Technology Forum will
receive the unique opportunity to attend a site visit to Europe’s
largest fully integrated biodiesel refinery in Wittenberg which
is part of the GATE Group Germany.
The
visit will take place during the afternoon of Tuesday 28th October
and will include an extensive tour of the facilities with technical
explanations.
Spaces for the visit are strictly limited and so early registration
is recommended.
On May 24, 2006, construction on the world’s
largest integrated biodiesel facility in the world began in Wittenberg-Piesteritz.
The oil mill and refinery were financed by the Hypo Group Alpe Adria
and grants from Saxony-Anahlt. The annual production capacity of
the facility is 200,000 tons biodiesel and 20,000 tons of high-grade
pharmaceutical glycerin. The oil mill is supplied by 520,000 tons
of rapeseed annually, guaranteed through long-term supply contracts
with German farmers.
This isn’t only the largest facility, it is
also the first fully integrated complex in Germany, with the oil
mill and biodiesel refinery located in direct proximity to one another.
Thus, entire production process - feedstock delivery to preparation
to pressing and oil extraction of the rape oil, and then raw oil
processing into biodiesel – is carried out efficiently at
one location. The cornerstone of the business is the delivery of
biodiesel to petroleum companies for blending with traditional diesel
products.
Biodiesel production in Wittenberg started in May
2007. The facility is a part of the GATE Group Germany, and can
thus operate successfully on an international level. GATE has further
biodiesel facilities in Halle an der Saale, in Enns in Upper Austria,
as well as a tank farm in Würzburg. Upcoming projects include
an oil mill to be constructed in Baja in Hungary, on the Danube
River.
