Strategically placed along the eastern shore of the Caspian Sea on the northern border of Iran, former Soviet Republic Turkmenistan’s huge gas resource has the potential to reshape the region’s energy balance over the coming years. Although it is not entirely clear exactly how large this resource is, the very latest estimates suggest that the country has at least 10 percent of the world’s gas. Galkynysh – one of the world’s largest onshore gas fields – is thought to hold at least 14.1 trillion cubic metres (tcm), equivalent to 7.6 percent of the world’s total proven reserves.
